If you throw out the high/low and average the balance, you get approval rating 40.125 (akin to gymnastics or figure skating scoring).

If you just throw out Rasmussen from the mix, the average drops to 39.78.

In other words, an even bigger shit show and everyone but the Trump base recognizes it. Pretty much identifying the Trump base.

From the last thread:

re: #509 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Low marginal tax rates have led to a kind of fungal infection among the wealthiest Americans, the phenomenon of stupid billionaires, to say nothing of the lower level hinterland fatcats who make up the heart and soul of the Republican Party. 60 years ago, the wealthiest Americans had all kinds of personal and social shortcomings but they were neither short-sighted nor stupid, President Eisenhower’s characterization of the Hunt clan notwithstanding. With tax rates up to 92%, you couldn’t hang onto a big pile if you weren’t pretty sharp. It was a ruthless form of evolution, and it was done by design.

Part of what lowering the marginal rates did was blur the difference between “income” and “wealth”. Wealth is better measured by non-monetary assets - stocks, bonds, real estate, commodities. Income is just cash and cash loses value, long term. Yes, you need more income in order to generate wealth - income gets you in a spot where you can invest in those real wealth items - but if you’re just sitting on a mattress full of c-notes, you’re losing money.

Well, it looks like Sears Holdings was sold to the man who sent it into Chapter 11 in the first place, over objections from the PBGC, where the pledge that Sears Holding’s trademarks were pledged to them, with the “fact” that Fast Eddie pledged that he’d do right by keeping employees and stores open.

Yes. SDNY is referred to as the “sovereign district of New York” but they’re still absolutely subject to oversight by and direct orders from the Attorney General. Right now the appointed US Attorney for SDNY has recused, the investigations of Trump are being run by his deputy, and Whittaker is conflicted as fuck so he probably can’t move as hard as Trump wants. However after confirmation Barr could reign them in if he wants to. The only caveat to that relates to Barr’s own potential conflicts and how he responds to the recommendation he gets from the ethics professionals.

Technically, yes. As could the president. The US Attorneys for the Southern District of New York (and every other district, for that matter) are appointed by the president and serve four year terms, they are federal prosecutors (and also represent the US in civil cases as well). They are exercising delegated executive authority (all executive authority flows from the president) to “see that the law is faithfully executed.”

The other thing that they’re obviously not considering is that trying to reign in the SDNY’s investigation is going to mean more Congressional investigations and another avenue towards impeachment.

Also, the FBI office attached to SDNY leaks like a sieve. A lot of the agents in the New York office hated Clinton but that doesn’t mean they’re going to, or even can, protect Trump now. They created a gigantic shit show when they forced Comey to ratfuck the election, and the institutional damage the fallout from that continues to play out. I wouldn’t be surprised if what we’re seeing now is the pendulum swinging back partly out of shame and horror of what so many there did.

I am not a fan of Jeff Bezos. He’s another very rich man who needs to pay more taxes. On the other hand, I do have to admire his stand of not giving any f*cks about what AMI/National Enquirer/David Pecker have in their possession.

AMI basically tried to blackmail Bezos with texts and pictures to get him to say this:

A public, mutually-agreed upon acknowledgment from the Bezos Parties, released through a mutually-agreeable news outlet, affirming that they have no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AM’s coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces, and an agreement that they will cease referring to such a possibility.

with the proviso that:

In the case of a breach of the agreement by one or more of the Bezos Parties, AM is released from its obligations under the agreement, and may publish the Unpublished Materials.

(The Bezos Parties include Jeff Bezos and Gavin de Becker, a security consultant.)

medium.com

Again, I want to make it clear that I’m no supporter of Jeff Bezos, but I do think this is an interesting development. Bezos apparently believes this whole affair is due to AMI trying to get cozy with Saudi Arabia. I don’t know how true *that* is, but I’m sure more secrets are about to tumble out.

There were some challenges to Whitaker’s appointment. But the Supreme Court declined to take up the issue last month in one case. There’s a few more cases still pending, but if Barr is confirmed can be rendered moot. (Though a case like this should fall under the category of “capable of repetition, yet evading review.”

I remember going to an afternoon dinner party/whatever at the parents of my uncle’s fiancee (my dad’s oldest brother who had divorced ten years previously) while I was in college at CSUF back in 1990 or so. Gail’s (her name) dad was making a LOT of racist jokes about black NFL players etc. The rest of us said nothing and pretended to ignore it. I was there with my grandparents, who were WW2 generation and I could tell it was beginning to really bother them, but they were too polite to say something at someone else’s house. Grandaddy was not someone I would consider “woke” on racial issues as I recall, so the jokes had to be particularly egregious for him to get visibly offended.

His comment on the way out….

“I don’t think he like black people.”

I have heard the ashtray joke before somewhere… I think when I was in my teens, but I don’t remember any details. I am certain that it was told, not as a joke, but as an “eww, gross” example. By someone in my then age group. Definitely the “appeal” was in how sick it was and no-one thought for a moment that it was funny.

What I don’t get is how that abomination is even in the same category as the erection/broken nose joke. I mean, there’s been comedians (both Jewish and not, IIRC) more than happy to joke about the big nose stereotype for decades now. That’s legitimately one of those ‘all in good fun’ ones, isn’t it?

Watching Nicole Wallace’s show today and it seems Mueller will be reporting (at the least) Manafort was a Russian plant into the Trump Campaign and set up a confirmed deal that the money the Russians gave Trump for funding his businesses now had a payment to come due but may have been out of Trump control. That would be the sanctions against Russia would be voided if Trump won the presidency.

In comes Manafort and doing things like changing the Republican platform in regards and getting his hands on Trump campaign info to help influence the election.

It appears the Russian then pushed all their actions to get Trump elected for that sole purpose which comes down to money for the Russians. Those sanctions were costing Putin.

As soon as Trump was elected, General Flynn then contacted the Russians to confirm the sanctions would be lifted within a day or so of Trump’s election. That is where Flynn is caught lying to the FBI. He said he didn’t talk to the Russians.

The link to all of this apparently is the testimony of Rick Gates. That is why Manafort’s lawyers are doing everything they can to call Gates testimony into question. It appears Manafor’s lying to Mueller is going to cost him even more jail time now too. I think it was said he might be looking at ten years more.

What is still not clear is how much Trump himself knew. But that may not matter, his campaign was out of control and dirty dealing, so he is responsible.

Again…this just may be a taste of what Mueller has on the menu. But it may be damning enough on its own. I think it is pretty clear there will be more.

There were some challenges to Whitaker’s appointment. But the Supreme Court declined to take up the issue last month in one case. There’s a few more cases still pending, but if Barr is confirmed can be rendered moot. (Though a case like this should fall under the category of “capable of repetition, yet evading review.”

I thank you!

With legal issues and my lack of expertise, I often am not even certain how to correctly phrase the issue, let alone knowledgeably follow all the issues. And far too often reporters seem to be in the same boat.

So I greatly appreciate the answer from someone actually in the field!

Might also be a cultural difference, though; around here some of the more harmless stereotypes become a sort of good-natured interaction where genuinely noone would actually mean anything discriminatory, no matter where they’re on the political spectrum or whatnot.

And management has to be real careful about subordinate response to any kind of joke, what you’re telling sounds like a huge HR no-no even without a hint of an ethnic component TBH.

Then more than anything that’s kind of indicative of a deeper problem, isn’t it? I mean, nowadays with a decent employer (larger ‘shops, anyway, anything small has always been trouble in this regard) you ought to be reasonably confident in reporting something like that. You’re in an engineering(-related?) field, right?
At my one big American former employer they would have brought down the hammer on unwanted behaviour like that in no uncertain terms. Certainly wouldn’t have had to shop around for another offer (not you, anyway).

I listened to a podcast that specializes on China yesterday in which the former ambassadors from Mexico and Canada to China were interviewed. The question of how Mexico would react to a US-led push to ban Huawei from Western markets due to security concerns came up. The Mexican representative said, “in the past we would have tended to join with America, but we see no security problems, they have product we need, and we feel now no need to comply with America due to the changes caused by the Trump administration.”

The same will be true in many places. China will be the leader in 5G as things stand now.

As others (Big Papa and VB) have written, it’s a mezuzah. The tl;dr version is that if you watch the movie the Ten Commandments, you see Joshua put the blood of a sacrifice on the lintel and sides of the door so that G-d passes over houses of the pious Jews when G-d smites the first born in Egypt.

To commemorate that, we include a mezuzah on the doors of our homes (all entry/exit doors, room doors except bathrooms), and it contains several phrases from the Old Testament.

VB provided the link to Chabad… but here’s another source.

Reagan cut the top rate from 70% down to 50%.

We’re currently at a point where the top rate is 37%.

Since Reagan cut the rate, our debt has absolutely exploded. It can be traced back to that one move. Restoring a top tax rate of 50%, let alone 70% would help rationalize the tax code and begin to pay down the debt and cover all the nation’s needs.

The GOP will fight this because they think that taxes are something that only poor people should pay; and lie nonstop how the top tax rate will somehow adversely affect someone who falls into the middle class (at the same time that the GOP tax scam - the TCJA actually hit many in the middle class with a tax hike as a result of how the TCJA allocated the benefits and losses - the middle class carries the burdens so that the millionaires can get bigger tax breaks).

I get the feeling David reads LGF? UpChuck Johnson, for all his floor-shitting antics and outright racism, is trying to be a political inside baseball player, and he’s been lurking in the halls of power during Fuckface Von Clownstick’s tenure of squatting in the White House.

Damn. John Dingell died. He was a Twitter giant! And of course his lifelong pursuit of public service shouldn’t be ignored.

I read he was on the floor when FDR asked for a declaration of war against Japan. Guy lived so much history we only can read about.

That a picture of Richard Burr? I know it’s silly to make personality judgements on looks alone, but that does NOT look like a Senator you want to give a lot of shit to. Or publicly misquote.

Or fight a duel with (he’s a distant relative of Aaron Burr).

Not everyone is keen on Huawei, though. Poland and the Czech Republic are skittish about teaming up with Huawei and China.

Quite a few of China’s international partners have realized that making deals with China often leaves the international partners at a disadvantage. Also, China has considerable influence now on the ITU (International Telecommunications Union), which means it could leverage that influence to spread Chinese 5G tech all over the world. And trust me, you don’t want China building out your 5G network if you value your nation’s privacy and security.

It’s a completely false story being spread by right-wing trolls.

No surprise.

Even if false, I do think Alexandria learned how tough it can be to get by and that is why she is so strong on simple economics for everyone.

To be fair, those people are practically Canadian already anyway.

Can’t say I blame too much if they seceded.
